Case Study

The broadcasting industry in Akwa Ibom State of Nigeria had been solely ingovernment hands and seemed unfavourable for private enterprise as of 2008 whenTony Afia saw a need to venture into independent commercial broadcasting. In 2013,he founded Planet 101.1 FM Radio under his TAF Media Group and located the radiostation in his village, Ibiaku, where economic activities were minimal. Being the onlyprivate broadcaster and offering more latitude for alternative views unlike existingstate-owned media, Planet Radio became popular soon after its establishment andreached breakeven in a few years. It generated enough revenue to reinvest in themore capital-intensive television broadcasting Spectrum TV in 2021 and set up anindigenous language radio station both blazing a trail just like Planet Radio. Thestation tried to carve a niche for itself in its programming and trademarked itsprogrammes. Privately-owned competitors began to enter the market in 2016, and by2022, there were ten other radio stations scrambling for market share and Planetneeded more innovative ideas to stay afloat, what with some of the operators loweringstandards to gain more customers. With increasing access to internet-enabled mobiledevices, a greater number of people in Akwa Ibom became empowered to accesslocal information without subscribing to any of the traditional media radio and TV.Tony and his team needed to come up with strategies to remain relevant in themarketplace. Another urgent task at hand was how to create sustainable structuresand systems that would enable Planet Radio and the other subsidiaries to stay strongbeyond the founders lifetime.
