Given the importance of organisational culture to the overall effectiveness of leadership and organisational outcomes, the note discusses the critical role of leaders in shaping and reinforcing organisational culture for sustainable success. Theories of leadership were examined as well as the effect of styles and culture on leadership. The iceberg model of culture was used to explain the impact of culture on an organisation. The role of leadership in shaping organisational culture was discussed. The note concluded that, with advancements in globalisation and the international mobility of the workforce, the impact of culture in organisations can no longer be understated. Culture determines whether employees find working in an organisation conducive or otherwise, and it is important in employee motivation for goal achievement. Thus, the effectiveness of leaders is significantly affected by the cultures operating in their organisations. Leadership is, therefore, essential in establishing and sustaining an appropriate organisational culture, which is crucial to enhancing organisational performance. Leaders must ensure they create, shape, nurture and maintain the appropriate culture for their organisations.
