Regardless of the subject matter and the context, leadership influences change management and goal actualization. Sound and responsible leadership is required to guide Africas sustainable development journey for example, public and CSO leadership to steward public policy formulation and implementation and to achieve a high quality of public service support as well as citizen collaboration. Since the concept of sustainable development entails complex interactions and interrelationships between the society, the environment and the economy for present and future generations, the roles and responsibilities are at times unclear and the temptation to pass the buck is strong. Balancing the three plus more dimensions requires innovative leadership and concerted, and in many ways collaborative, initiative of African governments, their citizens and other stakeholders. In Africa, however, leadership is not always inclusive or collaborative and this may be a contributor to the slow pace of integrating sustainability considerations into her development. Other contributors include poverty levels, unemployment, inequity, insecurity, corruption, infrastructure gaps, poor governance and public distrust. Effective leadership to improve these areas can achieve long lasting and positive effects in African lives and economies.
